Knitty Nurse-to-Be

Slippers! Ok, just pretend like on the second slipper I didn't accidentally count the wrong number of stitches and totally throw the pattern off. They will still keep my baby girls tootsies warm, right? Lol*

Wooohooooiiieeeee :) GPA

Yippppeeee...once the last midterm grade was put in, my current GPA is 3.81. That is for four A's and a B+. Midterm grades apparently don't count for anything other than to let you know where you stand at this point during the semester, but I'm happy with my current standing! ;)

Should have some knitty pictures soon. ;) My Momma gave me a pattern for some slippers to knit, so cute! Looks like everyone will have warm feet this winter... ;)

About Blogging

Today in writing class we talked a little about blogs. Just wanted to say hello to anyone (or no one) of you who might have stopped by. ;) I really love blogging and in the realm of quilting, have learned tons this way. Recently I've been more focused on my career/education goals than sewing, but I can tell you if you have a hobby you love, and want to learn from the best, blogging is a great way to do that. Blogging has made some of the biggest names in quilting accessible to me in ways that wouldn't normally be possible. Most of the big name quilters have blogs, and interact with their readers through them. I once had Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts comment on my blog because I'd mentioned her in a post. She is a pretty well known quilter who has her own pattern line, several fabric lines, a number of books, and I've read all about her in my favorite quilt magazines. That was pretty exciting to little old me, quilting my heart out in small town USA!

So to make a long story longer, I love blogging, and I believe it's possible to do it safely, yet get a lot out of the experience. Since I haven't a darn quilty thing share I'll instead show off my pineapple quilt block that I've yet to expand on and a couple of my antique sewing machines! :) (The treadle - the one you move with your feet - is from the 1800's, my favorite machine.)

P.S. - for those of you who might be curious, I'm close to my 4.0 GPA goal but not quite there...I'm still waiting for my Math Midterm to be posted, praying it's an A to help pull things up, but currently my GPA is 3.77. *Argh!* Still trying though!

Wow, can you believe it's October already? I sure can't! Fall is flying by. Believe it or not I'm already planning my spring schedule for school. Tomorrow I meet with my adviser.

Today we got to explore the nursing labs a little bit. We were introduced to METI Man, a nursing patient simulator. He's kind of like a robot. LOL* Or a mannequin with robot qualities. He breathes, which is really creepy at first, and he also blinks. He bleeds, urinates, can be injected or used to practice administering medications through IV's. His pupils dilate, his tongue swells, you can feel a pulse in his feet, neck, and wrist - he's even anatomically correct so you can practice inserting catheters on his male OR female interchangeable parts. It's really pretty amazing! I'm so glad we're able to have this incredible technology to practice on. My biggest fear, and I'm sure it's likely the fear of many other nurses or nurses to be, is hurting a patient. If I'm gonna screw up, I want to do it on METI Man and not a REAL man!

Still working towards my goal of all A's, or at least as close to them as I can get, and guess what? I got an A on my psychology test! Out of 67 students in our class, five of us received A's. So I'm pretty proud of that. Now I'm off to bed...had a long evening spent with my Hubby and gorgeous girlie girls, and after a good nights rest I need to get back to studying. ;)

Sunday September 27th, 2009

I want to thank you all for your support, and encouraging words. I haven't had the time to reply to all of your comments, but each one means so very much to me. It's a good feeling knowing that there are kind strangers in the world, that we can connect through our love of creativity, and support each other. Kind of amazing, isn't it?

I won't find out about my psychology test until next week, but I'm happy to say that I received a B on my biology test Saturday. I worked very hard for it. Tell me though, why is it that I cannot be completely satisfied with a B? It's a good grade. Not a B+, not a B-, but a good ol' run of the mill, solid, B. I would have been devastated had I gotten a C. I'm so glad I didn't get one of those. I'm not sure if I can do it, but I'm kind of shooting for all A's in my classes. I have never done that before. I'd like to think I was capable of getting all A's in high school, even just once, if I had tried to. Like a lot of other students, I was more interested in socializing than I was in learning. I regret that now. They say hindsight is 20/20, and boy is that ever true for me.

So I'm setting this goal for myself...

...just once, I want to get all A's in my classes. Some of my classes are really HARD, but I think it's possible. Just one semester. I'm not like some of the truly brilliant people I went to high school with, who are now doing amazing things all over the world. Good grades don't come easy to me, but I'd like to believe that old fashioned idea that hard work can get you somewhere. So I'll try. Please keep sending those good vibes my way. They might just make all the difference!

Tests...tests...and more tests.

Two big tests this week, 25% of my grade in Biology and Psychology. Psych was yesterday, and despite studying my derriere off, I'm not expecting an A. It was really tough for me. Lots of those tricky questions where they want you to apply the information you've learned...but of course they have to be sneaky about it! Biology I'm feeling more optimistic about, but there is still an immense amount of information we are expected to know. I'm really trying to get the best grades I can get out of these classes without having a mental breakdown, but boy oh boy, it's a lot of work that's for sure. Despite the heavy load, however, I'm having a really good time. Wish me some luck for my Biology test on Saturday!

On the sewing front...well, really there isn't much of one right now! I had the opportunity to see Bonnie Hunter this coming Saturday, even paid for the workshop and everything, but am not going to be able to go. I have been waiting about a year for this show, so it REALLY stinks. But school is more important. Man - I better make enough money to go on a major fabric shopping spree after I am done and have earned my degree! To make up for all the really good quilty fun I'm sacrificing! Lol*

Alrighty, off to study...story of my life these days. I cook, clean, volunteer for my kids' schools, take care of the babies and help them with their schoolwork, then study, sleep, and do it again the next day. Wheew.

Exhausted Hopeful Nurse to Be

Thank all of you so very much for the encouraging comments on perusing a nursing career. I am back to school full time now, and Thursday got a 90% (or a low A) on my very first test!!! Woohoo! Prerequisites are supposed to be easy, but WOW, it's still a lot of work, and a lot of studying. I haven't had any time to sew. :( But my hopes are that it will all be worth it in the end. Besides, I've got Christmas break, spring break, and Summer break to sew my heart out! :)
